Monopoli, Castellana Grotte

Monopoli
Agricultural centre, industrial town and seaport, with some 50 thousand inhabitants, it was established after the destruction of the city of Egnazia.
Not to be missed: the baroque Cathedral (1742), which was built on an older Romanesque cathedral, and the Castle (1552), built by Charles V to strengthen the city's fortifications against forays, and which includes an Aragonese 15th century fortress.

Castellana Grotte
The city was built in a beautiful area, surrounded by extremely fertile agricultural plots, as located in the middle of an area of karstic type, giving rise to a set of underground caves carved by water which in the course of years melted and eroded limestone, giving rise to a unique cave system not to be missed.
